I was asked the other day to describe in one word what the garden means to people who attend. That was easy. Belonging.
Our annual open day is the culmination of a year at the garden. A window into what we get up to, a chance for our volunteers to show off what they do. Thirty of them helped out on the day.
From early spring the garden goes into overdrive; more visitors, more planting, watering, and even more watering. As well as our work at Moulsecoomb Primary and Brighton Aldridge Academy, holiday schemes, school visits, plant sales and more.
So what is the open day for?
It isn’t about raising money or even raising awareness – although of course we’re more than happy if both these things happen, and especially if people become Friends of the Forest Garden
The adults with learning disabilities, children in care, children from the local area. This is their space. An opportunity to feel part of a community and proud of the work they do. To build their confidence and skills.
Following on shortly after our open day was our two day summer holiday scheme, packed to the rafters with Moulsecoomb Primary pupils. A school where we have been using their stunning grounds as an outside classroom for 20 plus years. We had three 15 years old helping out at the holiday scheme and a few more teenagers who used to come along, turning up just to hang out. I really like that. They are comfortable in the space, know the adults and most of the children really well. It’s free and they get fed. The area is crying out for a youth club to support this age group.
The youngsters we work with are the environmentalists, countryside rangers, wildlife conservationists and outdoor teachers of the future. We so need more from working class backgrounds to shake up the second most middle class profession in the country. Trying to overcome so many barriers and get a foot in the door is the million dollar question.
So when you boil it all down, its about belonging, being part of a team, feeling safe in a place, no matter who you are or where you come from.
